Participants Sought for RehabCare Course Which Seeks To Boost Father Son Relationships
Participants from across the country are once again being
sought for 'Raising Boys for Fathers', the innovative RehabCare course
specifically designed to equip fathers with the information and confidence
they need to manage and deal with their changing role in Irish society.
The course, which takes place at the end of February/early
March at five locations nationwide, will also help fathers
to improve their communication skills, so that they are equipped and
available to
talk to their sons should they encounter any of life's
problems.
In total, 24 fathers are being sought for each of the
'Raising Boys for Fathers' courses, which are free
to all participants. The courses
consists of two evening sessions, each lasting two
hours, and will take place at 8 pm in the following venues:
- Oriel House Hotel, Ballincollig: 26th February and 5th March
- Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, 26th February and 5th March
- Athy Community Development Project, Woodstock Street, Athy: 26th February and 5th March
- Youth Resource Centre, Mellowes Road, Finglas, Dublin: 1st and 8th March
- Greville Arms Hotel, Pierce Street, Mullingar: 5th and 12th March
Fathers will learn about research that shows how
they can have a uniquely positive impact on their
children's lives and development.
The course will also look at how boyhood has changed
in the past twenty years; the role of fathers;
and include a discussion on how fathers are
perceived by their sons, and information on what
is happening for boys as they grow into men. This
will be delivered through a
mix of discussion,
information and helpful hints from the facilitators.
The 'Raising Boys for Fathers' course was originally
developed by the North Western Area HSE and has
been successfully delivered in
that region for the past six years. It will be
given by specially trained RehabCare facilitators
whom themselves are fathers.
The course focuses on fathers and sons because
of growing concerns about boys' underachievement
at school, early
school leaving, road traffic accidents and suicides.
'The "Raising Boys for Fathers" course has been
specifically designed to address the needs of
Irish fathers; to
help them and their sons cope with new pressures
in a changing world,'
said Collette Ryan,
course co-ordinator, RehabCare.
'It is an unfortunate fact that high levels of
suicide are found among young Irish males. Although
by no means predicting suicide,
one of the many protective factors against it
is the presence of a supportive, caring adult in a
young person's life. It is obvious that a good
father-son relationship not only has a positive effect on
the individuals involved, but also on society
as a whole.'
