Course Aims to Enhance Life Skills for Young People
Monday, 7th April 2008: Participants from across County
Carlow have embarked upon a unique course specifically designed to
equip young people aged 15-24 years with the skills toolkit to deal
with life's events. Last week, 24 people from Carlow Youth Training
began 'Headsup Lifeskills', which provides an opportunity for young
people to develop their personal skills to help them get more out of
life and to cope better with everyday problems they may encounter.
The six-week course, which is given in three-hour sessions,
covers a range of topics including self-awareness, communication
skills, self-confidence, role models, problem-solving and self-esteem.
It is
free and delivered through a combination of presentations,
discussions, and the application and practice of specific skills.
'Headsup is a youth mental well-being project and the "Lifeskills"
course has been especially developed to meet the expressed
needs of young people and to help them develop ways to achieve their
goals and
deal with life's ups and downs,' says Collette Ryan,
Project Manager, Rehab Group. 'Previous feedback from participants
in Drogheda, Navan
and Palmerstown has been very positive with participants
looking forward to attending the course each week and gaining useful
skills that they
continue to use each day.'
The 'Headsup Lifeskills' course will be available in five
locations in 2008 as part of Rehab Group's Headsup project.
Ten 'Lifeskills' courses are being funded by Pobal.
